Understanding The Basics Of Your Home's Wiring
Knowing wiring basics helps you spot trouble early - and speak the language when you call an electrician.
The anatomy of your home's wiring system
Electricity enters through the switchboard - the controller that distributes power across lighting circuits, power circuits, and dedicated runs for heavy appliances like ovens and air conditioning. Each circuit is protected by a breaker; modern boards add safety switches on top.
Older Illawarra homes may still carry vintage cabling - rubber-insulated wiring that cracks with age. If your home predates the 1970s with original wiring, condition matters more than anything.
Signs of wiring problems
Watch for: flickering or dimming lights, discoloured or warm power points, a tingle from taps or fittings, frequent breaker trips, or a persistent burning smell. Any of these deserve a proper diagnosis - not a reset and hope.
Renovations are another trigger: adding bathrooms, kitchens or air conditioning changes load patterns that old wiring was never designed for.
Safety checks and inspections
A licensed inspection covers switchboard condition, safety switch coverage, earthing, smoke alarms and evidence of illegal DIY work - reported in plain writing. It's cheap certainty, especially pre-purchase.
